India’s 60th Republic Day
India celebrated its 60th Republic Day today. The Republic Day of India holds a special place in the hearts of the citizens of India.
It was only on 26 January 1950, three years after India received its Indepence (15 August 1947), that India was finally freed from the British rule. India’s constitution came into effect from this day.
The most important event for the day is the ‘Republic Day Parade’ that happens near the historic India Gate and Red Fort.
The three major divisions of the Indian Defence Army, Air Force and the Navy put on special parades and also showcase the latest in their armoury. It is a treat to watch the entire day’s activities that go on at New Delhi, India’s historic city and capital.
The events for the day unfold with the Prime Minister paying respect to the brave soldiers of India. This is followed by the President of India taking the salute from the Armed forces of India along with the chief guest for the day. India hosted President Lee Myung bak, President of Republic of Korea as the chief guest this time.
